About KOFIHThe KOFIH Ghana Office attended the opening ceremony of a Stroke Unit at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) in Ghana on February 17.
This facility was initiated as part of alumni activities by a CCTH physician who completed the 2023 Dr Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program clinical training course. Inspired by the advanced stroke management system experienced during training in Korea, the physician planned the project to apply the knowledge gained during the fellowship to the local healthcare setting. As a result, the stroke management system experienced during the training has led to the establishment of a specialized stroke treatment unit at CCTH.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Ghana, and there has been a strong demand for specialized treatment facilities. However, the country has faced limitations in establishing an adequate response system. In response, the KOFIH Ghana Office supported the establishment of an eight-bed specialized Stroke Unit at CCTH as part of KOFIH Global Alumni (KGA) activities of the Dr Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program.
Dr. Eric K. Ngyedu, Director of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, expressed his expectations, stating, “This facility represents a significant milestone where support through Dr Lee Jong-wook Fellowship has translated into the strengthening of practical stroke management services.”
The KOFIH Ghana Office will continue to actively support KGA activities so that the advanced knowledge fellows have acquired can further contribute to improving the quality of Ghana’s healthcare system.
