About KOFIH□ The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) held the ‘Strengthening Laparoscopic Surgery in Ghana’ at the BH Hotel in Cape Coast on October 28, 2025. This event was organized to share the outcomes of the laparoscopic surgery capacity-building project implemented over the past five years (2021–2025) at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, supported by the Community Chest of Korea (CCK), and to discuss strategies for expanding laparoscopic services centered on Ghana's public hospitals. A total of 91 participants attended, including representatives from the KOFIH Ghana Office, the Western Regional Minister, Ghana Ministry of Health, the Western Regional Health Directorate, the National Health Insurance Authority, and hospital directors.

□ The review meeting commenced with a welcome address by the Director of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Experts from both countries shared key achievements in training, clinical practice, and policy. It was emphasized that approximately 30 medical personnel has been trained at the two teaching hospitals and the continuous increase in laparoscopic surgery cases have improved surgical accessibility and patient safety in public hospitals. Analysis also indicated that the stepwise training system, progressing from simulation to mid-sized animal practice to live surgery, was effective in enhancing medical staff proficiency.

□ The subsequent panel discussion addressed policy and financial challenges for nationwide scaling of laparoscopic services, along with sustainability measures. Participants emphasized that key elements for future national expansion strategies include health insurance coverage, improved procurement of equipment and consumables, mitigating regional disparities in medical access, and raising public awareness. KOFIH and Ghana Ministry of Health stated they would continue cooperation to expand public access to laparoscopic surgery based on these achievements.

□ Furthermore, KOFIH received an award in recognition of its contribution to strengthening hospital capabilities, including establishing a laparoscopic operating room and educational environments, through its close partnership with Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
