[LJW Fellowship News] KOFIH held the 2025 LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program Opening Ceremony & Orientation

On September 10 (Wed), the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH, President Il-Soo HA) held the "2025 LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program Opening Ceremony & Orientation" at the KOFIH LEE Jong-wook Hall in Seoul.

A total of 113 participants attended the event, including 73 fellows* who will join the second half of the 2025 training program, training institutions and relevant guests. The ceremony began with the welcome address by President Il-Soo HA, followed by response remarks from a trainee representative and an interactive networking program designed to foster fellowship and solidarity among participants.
 * Fellows by country (14 countries): Ghana(7), Lao PDR(3), Rwanda(1), Malawi(1), Mongolia(5), Bangladesh(2), Vietnam(13), Sri Lanka(1), Ethiopia(6), Uganda(10), Uzbekistan(8), Egypt(2), Cambodia(7), Tanzania(7)

The subsequent orientation session included introduction on living guidelines and the lecture of gender sensitivity to support fellows' adaptation to life in Korea with an experiential lecture on Korean history & culture that enhances mutual understanding and smooth social & cultural adjustment during the training period.

Throughout 2025, a total of 195 healthcare professionals from 20 countries across Asia and Africa will participate in 9 fellowship training courses.
The participants - including clinicians, nurses, and health administrators - will be trained in specialized programs hosted by major Korean universities and medical institutions such as Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Soonchunhyang University, Inje University, Eulji University, GC Labs.

This opening ceremony was particularly organized for fellows in the following courses: △Graduate Degrees Course, △Infectious Disease Specialists Training Course, and △Health Professional Education Training Course. They will engage in mid- to long-term training lasting from 2 months to 2 years in diverse fields such as medical science, nursing, biomedical engineering, medical education, and infectious disease control.

Since program had launched in 2007, the LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program has carried forward the legacy of the late Dr. LEE Jong-wook, the 6th Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). As of 2024, the program has trained 1,672 healthcare professionals* from 30 countries, empowering them to become key personnel and contribute to improve clinic, policy and public health sectors in their respective countries.
 * Asia 959 trainees(57.4%), Africa & Latin America & Middle East : 731 trianees(42.6%)

In his welcoming address, President Il-Soo HA stated, "Today's opening ceremony marks a meaningful first step for healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds to build solidarity and cooperation here in Korea." He added, "We hope that through this fellowship program, participants will further develop their expertise and competency, and together with KOFIH, help shape the future of global health."
