From July 5 to 13, KOFIH`s foreign cooperation team basically performing projects to provide support for healthcare in developing countries conducted a project at Udomsai State Hospital in Laos to provide operative treatments to 24 cleft lip patients living in the northern area of Laos.
This project for operative treatments was conducted to apply to the requests made by the Health Department of Laos. The members involved in this project included KOFIH`s members having experience in giving cleft lip operations at Uzbekistan in 2007. The participants are Lee, In Seung, the director of Lee, In Seung Plastic Surgery, Lee, Jeong Soo, the director of Bom Plastic Surgery, and Lee, Soo Hyang, a plastic surgery specialist from Konkuk University Hospital.
The northern areas of Laos lacks hospitals specialized in cleft lip operations and most of the patients requiring cleft lip operations are counted as the low-income class. Therefore, their capability to approach medicine is very weak. In particular, such areas consist of patients requiring cleft lip operations.
KOFIH provided food/transportation cost as well as the costs to cover surgeries including medicine costs, anaesthetic costs, inspection costs, and hospitalization costs. The people who couldn`t afford to get surgeries were able to receive surgeries based on KOFIH`s provision.
After surgeries, Udomsai State Hospital stated that cleft lip operations are essential in the northern region of Laos and the hospital demanded KOFIH`s visit next year as well. The director of the hospital quoted "In near future, we have plans to develop Udomsai State Hospital into core hospital in the northern areas of Laos" and he repeatedly requested the utmost support and sponsorship from KOFIH. During this visit, KOFIH donated the patient-monitoring equipment to the hospital.
