34th S.Korea/N.Korea`s Co-treatment in Onjeong People`s Hospital

34th South Korea/North Korea`s Co-treatment in Onjeong People`s Hospital is one of the KOFIH`s projects to provide support for healthcare in North Korea. It was conducted from March 26 to March 28 at Onjeong People`s Hospital located in Onjeong-Ri, Goseong-Gun, Gangwon-Do, North Korea. The treatment team included Yang, Hee Man, the deputy head of KOFIH`s medical instrument support center, Jang, Jae, Hyung, the director of Jeonju Agape Long-term Hospital and a member of the International Medical Assistance Team, Lee, Sang Yoon, the director of Dongin Hospital(Gangryeng-Si, Gangwon-Do) who volunteered to provide medical assistance, and Gu, Hyun Cheul, a internal medicine specialist from Sooncheonhyang Hospital(Bucheon-Si, Gyeonggi-Do) treated 25 North Korean residents in this South Korea/North Korea`s Co-treatment. Director Jang, Jae Hyung who gave internal medicine treatments to the residents detected patients suspected of duodenal ulcer, tuberculosis, and hepatocirrhosis through ultrasonic inspection, X-ray inspection, urine inspection, liver function inspection, and ECG inspection. Director Jang who visited North Korea for the first time quoted "Treatment records for the patients were well-organized. Even though this was my initial treatment, I experienced no difficulties" and also quoted "It was very meaningful time". Internal medicine specialist Gu, Hyun Chul who conducted intensive inspections through gastroscope quoted "I conducted inspections on stomach and large intestine through endoscope. As a result, I detected indications of reflux esophagitis, duodenal ulcer, and stomach ulcer. Therefore I treated them". Specialist Gu who visited North Korea for the first time quoted "A number of patients showed digestive system-related diseases regardless of their ages. Helocobacter inspection had to be executed, but it was sad that I wasn`t able to perform any related diagnosis". Director Lee, Sang Yoon who diagnosed patients in surgery section gave treatments to 12 patients including a patient with a piece of glass stuck around his eyebrows when he fell down three months ago. Director Lee quoted "A number of patients demanded plastic surgeries even though the section was supposed to offer regular surgeries only. I had to refuse their requests" and also quoted "It was sad that we didn`t have Mammo graphy since I was not able to perform specific diagnosis for patients who received breast extraction surgeries". For a pilot survey to hand down techniques in particular fields during this visit to North Korea, Jeong, Hoo Keun from Korea Association of Health Promotion, the section chief of International Cooperation Department, Kim, Yong Woo, the chief of Seoul Medicine Research Institute Headquarters, the deputy chief Ryu, Gwang Seok, and team chief Kim, Jin Hee participated. During the visit to North Korea, the deputy chief Ryu gave lectures on method of judging normal and abnormal cells by using stereopticon, method of manufacturing blood pint-out slide, and method of counting WBC/RBC through hematology inspection. He quoted "After giving lectures, we practices together" and also quoted "their passion for learning was amazing and I donated almost all supplies and consumables used in the lectures". Medical equipment donated through this visit to North Korea included 1 stereopticon, 6 films of cell morphology, approximately 30 yellow tips, approximately 50mL of Saline, and approximately 80 applicators. Yang, Hee Man, the deputy chief of KOFIH who visited North Korea as a field agent of administration and progress, conducted a pre-discussion on the project for parasites inspection scheduled this April. In addition, he also sent medical supplies and consumables to provide support for South Korea/North Korea`s Co-treatment.
