Execution of 2nd Project for Management of Parasites in Laos

From November 20th to December 5th KOFIH`s project team for parasites management conducted the 2nd project for management of parasites in areas near Vientiane, the capital city of Loas. This project included ultrasonic diagnosis, feces inspection, blood(serum)inspection, larva inspection, and administration. Laos is a country in vicinity of the Mekong River and its people are greatly exposed to Clonorchis sinensis since raw freshwater fish is their main food. Infection of Clonorchis sinensis leads hepatism and cholangiocarcinoma as it develops. Therefore, people die at young ages in a lot of cases. However, the Health Department of Laos contains no accurate statistics or diagnosis data. The project team for parasites management includes Lim, Han Jong, an honorary professor of Korea University, Min, Deuk Young, an honorary professor of Hanyang University, Che, Jong Il, a professor of parasitology of medical college of Seoul National University, An, Yoon Oak, a professor of preventive medicine of medical college of Seoul National University, Um, Gi Sun, a professor of parasitology of medical college of Chungbuk National University, Yong, Tae Soon, a professor of parasitology of medical college of Yonsei University, and Lim, Jae Hoon, a professor of Samsung Medical Clinic. Through ultrasonic inspection, 7 of 485 people were diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma and through feces inspection, 491 people(62%) were found infected by Opisthorchis viverrini. The project team for parasites management provided medical equipment and gave technical instructions to eradicate parasites. In addition, parasite medicine was given to 10,000 people as well. From November 29th to December 5th, Lee, Gang Hee, the chief of planning department of KOFIH, and Kim, Hyun Kyung, the chief of the medical assistance team visited the field in Laos where the project for management of parasites is being conducted. They had a discussion with the department of WHO representing Laos based on results of the project team for parasites management and demanded WHO to provide more active support for the project for parasites management in Laos. Issues including △Support for polio vaccine in Laos, △Support for respirator in Mahosot National Hospital, △Observation on cleft lip surgery in Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital, and △Support for the project for parasites management were discussed with the Health Department of Laos and the department of WHO representing Laos.
