On June 8th, KOFIH sent the Korean Medical Assistance Team to Laos for a visit along with Lim, Han Jong, an honorary professor of Korea University, Min, Deuk Young, an Honorary professor of Hanyang University, Che, Joing Il, a professor of Seoul National University, and Um, Gi Seon, a professor of Chungbuk National University. The purpose for this visit was to perform a pilot survey on Laos Parasite Eradication project scheduled in upcoming November. Professor Lim, Han Jong`s team conducted the parasite eradication project in Laos for 5 years from 2000. The Korean Medical Assistance Team observed the areas near Vientiane, Savannakhet, and Champasak in Laos. In particular, approximately 1,700 people lived in Nakhouay village near Vientiane area. For the past year, 15 people were killed by liver diseases such as hepatitis and liver cancer. Currently there are 5 patients. Nakhouay Village people enjoy seasoned raw fish known as `Pralape` and this was analyzed as a main factor causing such parasite diseases. Throughout the past five years of conducting a project for parasite eradication, the number of people eating raw fish has been reduced significantly as of now. Laos DoH and the Korean Medical Assistance Team decided to concentrate on finding patients suffering from a liver disease and detecting areas where parasites are being spread. 4 central areas were designated in Vientiane, Savannakhet, Champasak, and Phongsali as the locations for the parasite eradication project. The project will be executed during June 2008 in Savannakhet area and during November 2008 in Champasak area. The Korean Medical Assistance Team provided patients` information to Mohosot Hospital, Mitapop Hospital, Savannakhet Hospital, and Champasak Municipal Hospital. Then the team requested for cooperation on parasite extermination project by providing locations for clinical inspections. In addition, respirators(worth 100,000,000Won) supported by USA and Japan is scheduled to arrive at Mitapop Hospital and technical support(medical instrument education) is will be run by WHO. Giving consideration to lack of professional labor forces in Laos, the labor forces in each hospital require an education.
